Here’s a secret: our gold winner, Kavita, opened near Olympic Village a single day after the cut-off to be considered for the 2026 Restaurant Awards, but our discerning panel of judges fought for chef Tushar Tondvalkar’s new concept to be put on the list of contenders. And, oh, are we ever glad they did. The food here is something special, with fresh, whole spices—roasted and ground in-house—that transform locally sourced or foraged ingredients into bright, lively dishes packed with flavour. “The cooking is off the charts,” raved one judge. Though the tasting menu changes daily, depending on the proteins and produce that roll into the kitchen, standouts include the spiced chickpea purée served on a crisped bit of deer lichen, eggplant with spiced yogurt and a lush orange-pine sorbet.

Silver: Vij’s

Joining the round-up of Best Indian with silver is Vij’s, which continues to be a legend for good reason: West Coast ingredients run through a rich lens of Indian flavours, plus “there is an aliveness that cannot be duplicated” in dishes such as the lamb rogan josh, which hits deeply with warm spices and heat, the Goan-style halibut and the lush, rich, slow-cooked dahl makkhani.

Over in East Vancouver, newcomer Peya enters the list seated at bronze with its French-Indian delights: a must-try here is the rabbit kebab, which arrives sitting on a bed of bright green pistou.
