15 Small, Independent Vancouver Brands to Shop Instead of the Shein Pop-Up
Sip a cocktail, sink into a good book and read alongside fellow bibliophiles—small talk optional.
Are you an introvert looking for a low‑key Granville Island outing? Then you might be interested in Liberty Distillery’s Books, Booze & Chill—the new monthly meetup for book lovers who want to enjoy a brew and a good read without the pressures to gab. Think: bookclub where you can sip cocktails (or mocktails) and read alongside fellow book lover with no need for small talk.
Since opening its doors back in 2013, Liberty Distillery has been known for serving up their own brand of traditional spirits made from 100 percent BC organic grains. Now, they are playing host to the ultimate chill reading room with a homey, cozy vibe that’s perfect for losing yourself in your fave novel and a boozy pint (good luck pulling that off at your local library!).

Unlike most book clubs, there’s zero pressure—no assigned titles, no forced chit‑chat and no post‑read discussions. Bring any book you like, then read in cozy company—or strike up a convo if you’re feeling social. As their slogan says: “Let’s read alone, together”.
If you’re not the read-alone type, you can participate in the ice breaker at the start of each session which includes trivia and door prizes (because sometimes a little incentive to mingle is nice!)
“People have an opportunity to introduce themselves and learn a little bit about what other people are reading,” says Lisa Simpson, proprietor and director of operations at Liberty Distillery. “Before they leave, we provide a list that they can write down of what others’ book titles are.”
If you’re interested in a good sip while you read, I’d suggest the whiskey-forward Kasama Old Fashioned ($14) with caramel‑chocolate and bitters. Not drinking? The fizzy Apple Caramel mocktail ($8) with apple juice, caramel, lemon and ginger ale pairs perfectly with your best page-turner.
Join this cool new monthly (but not too social) hangout for readers—next up May 27. Tickets are $17.31 and include a cocktail or mocktail and cozy company. Grab yours here..
