Exclusive Olympic Images, Day 12

It’s being called the skate of a lifetime. Joannie Rochette of Ile Dupas, Quebec, turned in a near-perfect performance on Tuesday night despite the unexpected death of her mother only two days before. From her first jump, a Triple Lutz and Double Toeloop, it was clear she was in strong form; only after the dance was finished did she display the immense emotions she was experiencing. As she stepped off the ice, photographers swarmed her and coach Manon Perron, as seen here. The second half of women’s figure skating, the free program, runs tomorrow. Korea’s Yu-Na Kim gave a world-record performance to take first place, with Japan’s Mao Asada in second.
