5 Things to Do in Vancouver This Week (April 11-17)

1. Chilliwack Tulip Festival

April 11 – May 1

The annual Chilliwack Tulip Festival is back so you can lean into springtime while you roam through 20 acres of 30 tulip varieties and 15 types of daffodils. To put it in perspective, there will be over 9 million bulbs blooming this year. Plus, there will be a farm shop open daily where you can purchase fresh cut and potted tulips to bring home with you. At the shop you can also purchase refreshments and grab a bite to eat at one of the many onsite food trucks.

2. Da Kink in My Hair

April 14 – May 15

Trey Anthony’s ‘Da Kink in My Hair is set in a Toronto hair salon and tells the stories of eight different women as they sit in hairdresser Novelette’s chair. Expect deep dives into the challenges and triumphs of the lives of contemporary Black women. Originally a play, this version now has the addition of music to elevate the emotional impact.

3. Emerge on Main: Spotlight on Rising Musicians

April 12

Emerge on Main is shining a spotlight on Cindy Kao (violin) and Aysha Dulong (electronics). Together they are Sapphire Haze, and their music is a unique blend of acoustic and electronic sounds that is meant to blur the lines between the two and invoke a soundscape that engages all of your senses.

4. White Noise

April 16 – May 1

The world premiere of the late Taran Kootenhayoo’s play White Noise is here. It is a comedy about two families having dinner together for the first time during Truth and Reconciliation Week and explores two different experiences of living in Canada. This thought-provoking play asks us to consider how we deal with internalized racism while also recognizing our role in reconciliation and our responsibility to gain a greater understanding of Indigenous people.

5. 30 Days of Ramadan at Science World

March 30 – June 20

In honour of Ramadan, Science World’s newest art exhibition is shining a light on fasting in the animal kingdom. Learn about the many reasons why animals fast (including hibernation!) and see them depicted in a style inspired by Square Kufic calligraphy, which is usually found in Islamic architecture.
