The Best Food Events and Pop-Up Dinners in Vancouver This August

Special pop ups, milestone celebrations, festival, summer BBQs, collab dinners and limited-time menus take over the city in the month of August.

The post-FIFA buzz may be winding down in Vancouver, but summer is not over yet, and so are other exciting events happening in the city. Get your taste buds ready for some tasty, unique, seasonal culinary offerings and experiences in Vancouver this month.

Burdock x Passage Collab Dinner at Burdock and Co 

Catch a collaboration dinner between Michelin-starred Burdock and Co Chef Andrea Carlson with Chef Johnny Spero of Passage at The Inn at Langley on Whidbey Island. The dinner serves up glasses from the O’Rourke Family Estate and Peak Cellars, who are the official wine partners for the dinner. Chef Spero’s history of late is decorated with stars himself: he was Eater‘s Chef of the Year and one of 10 contestants on Netflix’s The Final Table. After receiving a four-star review from Washington Post while he was the executive chef of Jose Andres’ avant-garde Minibar, he’s gone on to open his own seafood restaurants, the fine-dining Reverie and the more casual Bar Spero, which have picked up awards from Michelin, Esquire and James Beard. $195 per person, excluding tax and service; optional wine ($95) and non-alcoholic ($65) pairings will be available.

Fanny Bay Oysters x Holy Duck Chili Collab at Fanny Bay 

Fanny Bay Oyster Bar and  Shellfish Market Head Chef Alex Guido is serving a week-long menu collab with local condiment company Holy Duck Chili. The menu incorporates Holy Duck products, (Hong Kong’s flavour of artisanal chili oils, sauces and seasonings made with Canadian ingredients) including its original Holy Duck Chili and Salted Egg Yolk Lava Chili Oils and duck fat-infused Typhoon Shelter SumSum seasoning spice rub in a menu which features a SumSum Caesar ($17) of vodka, Fanny Bay caesar mix, candied salmon, jumbo prawn; Baked Mussels ($16) of Totten Inlet mussels, Holy Duck Salted Egg Yolk Lava chili oil, chicharron; Grilled Oyster Skewers ($21) chili oil-marinated Fanny Bay oysters, scallions, duck fat infused seasoning aioli and Blackened scallops ($38), a Typhoon Shelter seasoning-rubbed scallops, caramelized ginger and mango purée, shishito peppers, herb salad. Fanny Bay and Holy Duck are also teaming up for an Instagram giveaway where one lucky winner will win a Holy Duck Chili Oil Party Pack and a $100 gift card for Fanny Bay.

Juke Fried Chicken’s $15 OG Jukebox and Golden Ticket Contest 

Juke Fried Chicken is celebrating their 10-year milestone birthday with the return of its most loved $15 OG Jukebox combo. It features Juke’s three OG BBQ pork ribs glazed in house-made barbecue sauce, the original rib flavour; two pieces of its buttermilk-brined fried chicken breaded in Juke’s signature gluten-free seasoned batter; and All Dressed Fries, featuring golden seasoned fries topped with spicy garlic mayo, jalapeño, red onion and cucumber pickles, fresh green onion, crispy fried onions, and parmesan. Celebrate Pride Weekend at Honey Salt  

Honey Salt is celebrating Pride Weekend on August 1 and 2 with a colourful brunch experience designed for gathering, sharing and celebrating together. Available from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests can enjoy a vibrant Pride-inspired menu featuring a grand tier of savoury and sweet bites for the whole table. The celebration begins with a stunning spread of deviled eggs, smoked salmon blinis, fresh fruit, chocolate-dipped croissants, lemon tartlets and a rainbow-layered Pride confetti cake.  

Guests can then choose from a selection of brunch favourites, including avocado toast, classic eggs Benedict with smoked bacon, grilled chicken Cobb salad or Pacific rockfish fish and chips. To complete the celebration, raise a glass at the build-your-own mimosa cart, available by the glass or as a bottle service experience, with a choice of colourful juice pairings including orange, grapefruit, white peach, mango, strawberry or passionfruit. Icon Dinner Vol. IV: Salvador Dalí at The Polygon Gallery

This year’s Vancouver-based dinner series, Icon Dinner Vol. IV, is bringing two acclaimed chefs: Kenta Takahashi, executive pastry chef at Boulevard alongside Macia Bagur, chef de cuisine at Meo, for a one-night-only tasting menu experience inspired by Salvador Dalí. This edition presents the intersection of surrealist art, storytelling and gastronomy in one of Vancouver’s beautiful gallery spaces. Tickets are $250 (includes all food, beverage and gratuity). Sip on a welcome cocktail by Kavita’s Kabir Sehgal and wine pairings throughout dinner. Spot one of their signature Icon booklets that walks through the inspiration behind the experience.

Milk Crates, Skewers and Dumplings at Light Up Chinatown 

A fun day-to-night, multi-way collaboration is happening at Light Up Chinatown festival this August. From grills, snacks, street-style pop ups, pulling up milk crates, a mashup of lineup which includes Meatball Dumplings (Say Hey’s signature meatball recipe wrapped into Dicky’s Dumps signature dumplings), the Dumpling Glizzy, (chicken and ginger filling made into a sausage, grilled, stuffed in a bun) smashed cucumber salad, cold beer and refreshing drinks, with more menu surprises, to Party of 5, a $65 ticketed wine and skewers event that widens the circle to five chef teams, festival goers will have lots to do and choose from. Keep an eye out for these unique creations as Say Hey Cafe and Touski turn into Same Same But Different Snack Bar by day.

Burdock and Co’s Walk-In Bar Menu and Gobo in the Garden  

Burdock and Co is serving up a new à la carte bar menu with a casual twist, with some of chef-owner Andrea Carlson’s personal favourite items and seasonal offerings. Indulge in their popular buttermilk fried chicken, chilled sesame udon and moreish ramen fries and a drink pairing of small-batch, terroir-driven wine selected by wine director Maisie Ryan. Summer specials feature fig-sap ricotta with Lillooet honey and sourdough toast, celebration salad with lemon verbena vinaigrette and uni gelato sandwich on a nori biscuit. Get swept away at a smoking-hot yakitori party this summer, every other Sunday, as Bar Gobo takes over with their DJs spinning vinyl among the lush greenery. Chef Kyumin Kim will grill up skewers of mochi, cheese and assorted meats paired with low-key farm-grown glasses and bottles of wine.

Winemakers Dinner with Poplar Grove Winery at Bacchus Restaurant and Lounge 

Bacchus Restaurant and Lounge is celebrating the 30th vintage of Poplar Grove Winery (one of the original five wineries on the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley), hosting with Poplar Grove’s owner Tony Holler, for an intimate, one-night-only winemakers dinner which will showcase the winery’s portfolio paired along a multi-course menu by executive chef Stefan Hartmann and wine pairings curated by Bacchus’s head sommelier Mark Taylor. Feast on spot prawn tartare crispy wonton to start, followeed by a four-course dinner. Tickets are available online ($207 per person, inclusive of taxes and gratuity).

Desert-Inspired Dinner Experience at Fable Kitchen 

This August, Fable Kitchen is bringing a farm-to-table culinary journey ($55 per person), inspired by the Sonoran Desert, Northern Mexico and the American Southwest. The limited-time tasting menu features smoky mesquite, vibrant chiltepín spice, slow-cooked beef and fresh seasonal B.C. ingredients. Start off with an enchilada montada, (crispy corn tortilla layered with chiltepín salsa, lime crema foam and frijoles con carne), followed by the main course: costilla de rez (an agave-glazed, mesquite-smoked beef rib served with salsa molcajete, verdolagas and grilled corn). End your meal with a sweet treat, flan de mesquite (creamy mesquite bean flan paired with vanilla and canela-macerated plums and corico crumble). Wine pairings ($25 optional) include Chursh Syrah and Whistler Late Harvest Riesling.

Cocktail Pop-Ups at Ama Raw Bar 

Ama Raw Bar is teaming up with two of North America’s top cocktail bars to pop up for a one-night-only event. The first pop-up ($20 food ticket) will showcase Massimo Zitti, owner of Toronto’s Mother (2022 World Class Canada Bartender of the Year), with fermentation-driven cocktails west. Alongside Zitti’s drinks, Ama’s head chef Sean Yuen will serve plate bites (inspired by the Mother program alongside Ama favourites). The second pop-up will showcase Humboldt Bar (#53 North America’s 50 Best, #34 Canada’s 50 Best), led by Brant Porter. The team is bringing the Sunday High Fi series to Ama for an evening of vinyl and creative cocktails.

 Lucknow’s Awadhi Cuisine at Wildlight Kitchen and Bar’s Summer BBQ  

Wildlight Kitchen + Bar’s Summer BBQ series is back this August with the Dawaat Awadhi Feast ($80++ per person), a one-night homage to the royal cooking of Lucknow, curated by Wildlight’s executive chef Timothy Hui and guest chef Tushar Tondvalkar of Kavita. Indulge in an evening of shared, family-style spread, starters (sev puri and bright tamarind-mint chutneys), charcoal-kissed kebabs (goat, lamb chop, paneer tikka, and chicken malai) dressed with UBC Farms greens, thin-sliced onion, and a mint-tamarind dressing, slow-built stews (braised goat shank, Murgh Musallam half chicken, Dal Bukhara, black lentils), and so much more.
