1. Vegan Fried Chicken and Ice Cream Sandwiches

July 6

This Tuesday is National Fried Chicken Day (and every day is National Marketing Day, don’t forget!) but Beetbox’s half price “chick-un” sandwiches are coming with something a little cooler—an ice cream sandwich collab with Rain or Shine. The fried chick-un sammies are $5 on the 6th, and that’s also your first chance to try the new frozen treat: coconut mango swirl ice cream between two ginger coconut cookies. No dairy, of course.

2. Dancing on the Edge Festival

July 8 to 17

There’s over thirty live and virtual shows at this year’s Dancing on the Edge Festival. You can catch open-air shows at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the Russian Hall and Iona Beach—plus the Firehall Arts Centre’s courtyard, where local group Immigrant Lessons (pictured above) will be performing on July 16 and 17 at 9:00 p.m.

3. Whistler Writers Fest’s Summer Comeback Reading Series

July 8 to 10

This mini series of hybrid events from the Whistler Writers Fest is easing readers and writers back into the regular fest. There’s events for kids and adults alike, but you’re definitely going to want to hear guest authors Joshua Whitehead (Johnny Appleseed) and Francesca Ekwuyasi (Butter Honey Pig Bread).

4. Gateway Theatre’s Songs of Summer

July 10, August 14 and September 11

The first of Gateway Theatre’s 2021 concert series starts this weekend, featuring local singer/songwriter Amanda Sum. It’s BYOB (bring your own blanket). Watch for an August performance from Tiana Jung and Jason Sakaki and another in September by Krystle Dos Santos and Steffanie Davis.

5. MOV’s Gift Shop Takeover

On through August 3

A local emerging artist collective called The Art Shop is taking over the Museum of Vancouver’s gift shop this month. The paintings, sculptures and other works are all available at a much more accessible price point than most gallery art (we’re talking $100-$500 for most pieces) so it’s a great opportunity to get gorgeous local artwork without breaking the bank—take a look at some of the art for sale here.
