What the editors of Vancouver magazine are asking Santa for this year.
Yes, we got a chance to share plenty of our favourite gift ideas in this year’s gift guide (and nagged our cool friends for inspiration, too), but when it came time to sit down and make our own wish lists, the picks got a little more personal. Here’s what our editorial team is asking Santa for this holiday season.
Not to blow up my spot, but Walrus on South Cambie is my go-to for housewarming gifts. Whenever a friend moves, I’m there picking up a Kinto rice cooker or 3D printed planter, but (confession time) it’s not just because I’m a generous person with impeccable taste: it’s because I want a little treat, too. Last time I was there, I popped a couple of Studio Arhoj Moon Plates up on the till for my own house… and, as it turns out, two are not enough. They’re hand-thrown in Copenhagen and come in delirious, delightful swirls or splotches of colours, and now every other side plate in my kitchen is a disappointment. Toast just doesn’t taste as good when eaten off of our other dishes. I can’t live with only a few of these pretty, perfect platters in the rotation. If Santa can’t provide this year, maybe I’ll just have to move—surely my great housewarming-present karma will deliver even if the big man doesn’t? —Stacey McLachlan, editor-in-chief
My vision of a perfect Christmas Day involves a book by the fire and rarely leaving the sofa, save for a refill on my rum and eggnog. Sure, at some point I’ll be in the kitchen rustling up a ham and all of that jazz for dinner, but the longer I’m in the book-fire-couch trifecta, the happier I am. And that, of course, requires perfect lounging attire. I touched a pair of these cashmere straight leg pants from Lululemon a couple of weeks ago, and honestly have not been able to stop obsessing about them and vision-boarding their important role come December 25. Yes, they’re splurgey, but holy heck are they soft. Christmas Dinner prep might be a little late this year. —Anicka Quin, VP content
My partner and I have gotten super into bitter drinks this year, and while our home bar is well-stocked with local spirits, bitters and garnishes (shout out Livia’s brandied cherries), our vermouth game has remained largely commercial. Odd Society’s bittersweet vermouth is apparently based on an old Italian recipe found in an antique notebook, which is absolutely the hook, line and sinker to convince me that this rich and botanical-forward vermouth is truly the game change my negronis need—and at a very giftable price. —Dani Wright, Managing Editor

I’m a big fan of both experience and physical gifts, and this is the best of both worlds. You can book the private studio with one to 14 people and DIY your own necklaces, bracelets, and bag chains with tons of options for charms. I used to have an Italian charm bracelet as a little girl, so the nostalgia is calling my name here. Who wants to go make friendship bracelets with me? —Rebekah Ho, Digital Marketing Manager
I’ve needed a good bathing suit for a while. My drawer is full of mismatched Lycra chaos—tops that don’t fit, bottoms that don’t match and a bikini I’ll never feel great in. I wanted one go-to suit that’s comfortable, versatile and, well, flattering. Left on Fridays has been on my radar for some time now (thanks to friends raving about their mix-and-match combos), but when I found this simple black one-piece, I knew I met the one. Like the classic little black dress, it’s an effortless staple and an investment in future beach escapes (is how I justify the steep price tag). It might be winter, but I’m already dreaming of my next sunny getaway—and this suit is coming with me. —Kerri Donaldson, Assistant Editor

Comfort is trending, and I’m officially done with stiff, overpriced work clothes. Although I’ve never bought anything from Lezé the Label before, I haven’t been able to get its “workleisure that feels like PJs” motto out of my head. I’ve had my eyes on the Lani and Isabella set for weeks now: the stretchy skirt pairs seamlessly with the sleek turtleneck top, complete with chic cap sleeves—perfect for the office or any work event. Plus, the thick, high-quality material hides the best secret of all: I’m basically ready to crawl into bed. —Rushmila Rahman, Associate Editor, BCBusiness magazine
