1. House of Rice at the Polygon

August 19

Vancouver’s favourite all-Asian drag family, House of Rice, is putting on a show at the Polygon this Thursday. It’s a fitting venue, since the North Van gallery’s latest exhibition (Interior Infinite) is all about artists who use costume, make-up and masquerade to express themselves. The special performance also includes a pop-up installation adjacent to the main exhibition (if you’re keeping track, that’s Interior Infinite, a pop-up and a drag show all by donation—cheap date alert).

2. The Cloud Cafe Pop-Up at the Shangri-La

August 19 to 22

To celebrate the launch of new unisex pyjama line Kip Sleepwear, the silk sleepwear company is throwing a four-day party. The theme? Clouds. And despite the cozy vibes, the launch won’t put you to sleep: they’re stocked up with goodies from Buttermere Patisserie to keep up your blood sugar. Think mousse cake, pavlova and macarons—all shaped like clouds, of course.

3. Uninterrupted in Virtual Reality

August 17 to 28

Okay, so Uninterrupted is technically “sold out” (evidence that this virtual reality multimedia show is hella cool) but you can still apply for last minute tickets using this link. If you can score tickets, you’ll be outfitted in a headset and sat in a swivel chair for the show, so you can take in every angle of the “extraordinary migration of Pacific salmon on a city bridge.”

4. CREATE! Arts Festival

August 21 & 22

This brand-new East Van arts festival is a hands-on celebration of local makers: they’re offering workshops in jewellery, ceramics, printmaking, glass blowing, painting and more. All of the workshops are accessibly-priced (most are $25) and are taught by fabulous Vancouver artists. Find the whole schedule here.

5. Stalkaya Immersive Art Exhibition

Through September 4

Called Stalkaya: Ḵ’elhmáy̓/X̱ápay̓ay, this new free North Vancouver art exhibition allows you to step into the forest—some 11 thousand years ago. You can watch a 360-degree immersive film called SANCTUARY from inside a geodesic dome, and see artwork by Tsawaysia Spukwus and Sesemiya Williams. If you don’t want to brave the bridge traffic, SANCTUARY is also playing every Friday through Sunday at MOA.
