28-Hour Stand-Up Comedy Marathon to Help Fund Fire Relief

Local comedians attempt to offer some comic relief.

When you think of comedy in Vancouver, you might immediately think of the big clubs—The Comedy Mix, Yuk Yuks—but the unsung hero of the scene is the understated Kino Cafe. Run by Steve Allen, the bar hosts the longest standing comedy night in the city. For the past 11 years, comics have flocked to the Kino stage on Tuesday nights to try stand-up for the first time or hone their craft. (Weekends are reserved for flamenco, naturally). So it makes perfect sense that this place, where every comic in the city has performed at one time or another, will be the site of a marathon comedy event in support of wildfire relief: 28 hours straight of standup comedy, beginning Monday night at 7:00 p.m.Allen, along with Laura Accili, has planned a show featuring 13 headliners (including Simon King), 14 hosts, and 99 comics in hopes of raising money for the cause—a pretty crazy undertaking. “I’ve worked on forest fires and I know how devastating they can be. People having to move out on a moments notice is one of those things you can’t describe.”  But that hasn’t deterred Allen or Accili.  “I know that the need for money is in the millions,” says Allen, “but this is more of a gesture to the folks in the interior.  We are thinking of you and we’ll do what we can to help.”The Kino has been around for 25-plus years, and features live entertainment seven days a week. Over the years they have raised money for multiple causes, and continue to always try and help out in their community.  “I think any time you do anything over the top it catches the eye of people that might not be thinking about whats going on around them.
