Best of the Neighbourhoods 2014

Our Restaurant Awards feature a distinctive new look this year, with the addition of Best of Neighbourhood awards for seven areas. This shift affirms our judges’ view that for most people most of the time place matters a great deal, and location is a consideration that may be at least as important as reputation, type of cuisine, ambiance, and price. We believe this adjustment instantly makes our awards more relevant.

We are also happy to address the judges’ concern that in the past cherished local institutions may have been overlooked in the catchall context of citywide judging categories-hopefully we are now better able to recognize them for what they are. And it is ironic that in a city where the locavore ethos has been so enthusiastically embraced, in many neighbourhoods a truly local restaurant-one that can be easily walked to and from-has been too much to hope for.

As demonstrated by many of our recent winners, thankfully this is changing. We are happy to encourage the trend.
