Oyster Week: Where to Buy Fresh Oysters in Vancouver

Ready to shuck it up? Here's where to source your shellfish.

Once you know the joy of shucking your own oysters, it’s hard to sit back at a restaurant and let some other shmuck with a knife do the deed. And sure, you could hit up the seafood counter at Safeway to snag the shellfish you need, but going on a little trip to the fish monger makes for a fun afternoon outing (we’re monger-positive here at Vanmag—let the record show). With that in mind, here are the best local seafood markets for sourcing fresh oysters for a DIY shuckathon at home.

Seafood City
Granville Island Public Market

The long-standing fish stall at the iconic Granville Island Public Market (it’s a fave of Chef Alex Chen!) sells a wide range of seafood, including oysters, of coy-ster. Prices vary, but expect a selection sourced right from Vancouver Island.

The Lobster Man
1807 Mast Tower Ln.

Lobster Man may specialize in lobster (duh) and have managed to convince us all that a $30-plus lobster roll can be worth every penny, but it’s also the go-to for oysters and other shellfish. Alimentaria Mexciana chef Martin Vargas is a fan.

7 Seas Fish Market
2328 W 4th Ave.

Kitsilano oyster lovers, we’ve got you covered: 7 Seas Fish Market on West 4th is the source for westsiders to find ocean-fresh oysters (plus poke-quality tuna, caviar and any of your other seafood-forward dinner-party essentials).

The Daily Catch
1418 Commercial Dr.

Over on the Drive, you’ll find the Daily Catch, its coolers stocked with sustainably sourced wild B.C. salmon fillets, swordfish steaks and more. Grab a bag of Effingham Farms Beachcomber oysters for $2 a piece or Atlantic Gems for $2.50 per.

Fanny Bay Oysters
762 Cambie St.

Fanny Bay’s family-owned downtown shellfish market also happens to have an oyster bar and restaurant attached, so don’t be shy about stopping for a quick crabonara and cocktail while you’re there.

eatFish.ca
Online

Though eatFish.ca (formerly Fresh Ideas Start Here) no longer has a Vancouver storefront (R.I.P. to the cheapest poke bowls in town), they’ll deliver Monday to Friday for free with a minimum order of $99—so put a big ol’ bag of oysters in your cart and invite your friends over. It’s an oyster party!

Hung Win Seafood
585 Gore Ave.

The Chinatown spot has got your Kusshi and Fanny Bay oysters, plus cocktail prawns and all the other goodies you need for the seafood bar of your dreams.

Hooked on Fish
4513 W 10th Ave.

Westsiders can swim on down to Hooked on Fish on West 10th for their fill of oysters and other oceanic treats, plus complimentary pantry essentials (Japanese mayo, seaweed).

Longliner Seafoods
Granville Island Public Market

In case Granville Island’s other seafood shops weren’t doing it for you, there’s Longliner, one of the original tenants of the Market. They’re too busy sourcing fresh seafood to even bother having an up-to-date internet presence. That’s dedication.
