The No Pressure Cookbook Club Is, Well, No-Pressure

A new, casual cookbook club kicks off this Sunday. Cook, or don't. Just come.

We normally spotlight cool clubs worth joining in our monthly print issue of Vanmag (you do have your free subscription, right?) but sometimes, there’s a new friend-making opportunity we can’t wait to put on your radar. Like right now: you’ve only got three days left to sign up to join the inaugural edition of the No Pressure Cookbook Club. If you want to be a founding member, the time to act is now, because it starts this Sunday.

The “casual cookbook club for casual cooks” is the brainchild of Rebekah Ho, an active home cook, content creator and social media specialist (full disclosure, she’s also Vanmag’s digital manager and a familiar face if you’ve been following us on TikTok or Instagram).

Ho’s idea is to gather people together for a potluck social night, with all the food prepared from the same cookbook. For edition number one, it’s the smash hit Tiffy Cooks by Vancouver’s own Tiffy Chen, a tome filled with approachable Taiwanese favourites. But the key to Ho’s No Pressure Cookbook Club is that participation can be as intense or casual as you want it to be. Not a seasoned cook? Ho will point you towards the easiest options to try. Don’t want to shell out for the cookbook? She’ll share some recipe options. Can’t get your dish together in time for the event? Just bring something else to share—even if it’s not homemade. No. Pressure. It’s right in the name.

The point, ultimately, isn’t to win some imaginary cooking contest: it’s to come on out of your own kitchen and gather around the table with other food-loving Vancouverites. Whatever this club is cooking up on any given week, it sounds like the dinner party of our dreams.

The first edition of No Pressure Cookbook Club takes place Sunday, March 30 at Birds and the Beets. Your $15 ticket includes entry to the party and one complimentary drink.
