Family Matters: Building Brighter Tomorrows in Vancouver

Family Services of Greater Vancouver plays an important role in shaping the future of our community.

Since 1928, Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) has provided vital support to communities across the Lower Mainland. Over the years, programs have evolved, changing to respond to what people need. Last year, the agency served more than 12,000 people across its programs and supports for families, survivors and youth. With Family Day on February 16, what better time to spotlight the work FSGV does with families?

Counselling

Whether it’s counselling for families healing from a traumatic experience or for those navigating reunification, the counsellors at FSGV are there with specialized, client-led support. In their own words, clients shared their experiences working with counsellors across the agency:

“Me and my two children feel empowered and safe during the whole period of counselling sessions.” – Family Counselling client

“I have re-experienced how parents should treat their children and deal with their emotions. Thank you for the learning period, which will benefit me for a lifetime.” – Counselling client

“Thank you for connecting us to one another again.” – Parent-Teen Mediation client

When families get the help they need, when they need it and according to their individual circumstances, they get to build their own personal foundation for a brighter future.

Financial Empowerment Education

There are many reasons people may need support from the Financial Empowerment program at FSGV. Most of the clients who access the program are people at risk of falling through the cracks of the financial system: newcomers, seniors on fixed income, low-income families, people who have left abusive or exploitative situations and youth. The support they find at FSGV equips them with real money skills and knowledge to move forward with confidence and resilience. As clients share:

“Being a migrant and not knowing exactly the Canadian financial system, the language barrier and some other things caused me stress and fear of making a mistake in the applications and forms. But knowing this type of support has been of great help to me and has helped me overcome obstacles.” – Financial Coaching client

Especially with the current affordability crisis, people need accessible programming to make sure they can stabilize their finances. The support available at FSGV strives to do exactly that, with a trauma-informed and judgment-free approach to financial education.

“My coach was very kind and knowledgeable. Easy for beginners to understand. Very helpful and willing to help with questions. Very welcoming.” – Financial Coaching client

The work Family Services of Greater Vancouver does with families, survivors and youth is possible thanks to a committed community of caring neighbours.
