Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna

For its 21st big-top show, Montreal phenom Cirque du Soleil wanted to reverse its traditional emphasis on male performers. Scouring all the usual circus sources—Japanese unicycle tents, Russian contortionism conventions, YouTube—director Diane Paulus found her stars, who combine to tell a love story set on a moon-enchanted island of aerial Amazons.
