Former Hotel Vancouver Florist Is Now Selling Her Holiday Cards Across Canada

Artist Lizz Miles once had her work featured on Hotel Vancouver's spring window display. Now, Vancouverites can take a smaller piece of her art home at the hotel's holiday pop-up market.

Lizz Miles remembers making cards for her family as a child, inspiring her to become an artist.

Fondly reflecting on memories in an email inbox is rare, but coming across a card in a shoe box can bring back nostalgia. For Miles, looking back at long-forgotten cards and letters gives her a chance to recall different chapters in her life and how far she has come.

“I recently received letters back from a relative who passed and it was so sweet getting back all the letters that I had written since I was a kid,” Miles said to Vancouver Magazine.

“I never kept a diary or journal, so it was really special,” she added.

Miles’ work was recently chosen to be featured in Fairmont Hotel Vancouver’s holiday retail pop up shop after she created a window display painting for their tea room this spring. The artwork features the iconic Hotel Vancouver building, surrounded by an abundance of flowers, such as lavender and chamomile – all types of floral tea offered in the hotel’s tea room menu.

When Miles first landed in Vancouver from North Yorkshire, England, in 2015, she found a job as a flower arranger at the Fairmont. She is proud that her creativity is still on display a decade later.

Her floral prints are all part of the holiday retail pop-up, open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the hotel’s lobby (900 West Georgia St).

Miles also shares the work behind her holiday greeting cards and the playfulness that inspired her to create them this year.

“I want people to respect my practice, but when it comes to Christmas, I just go for it. Let’s be cliche, have the glitter, sparkles and joy,” she says.

A staple for Miles while she’s working? “Always a cup of Yorkshire tea. Very strong!” she says with a laugh.

Sending cards and letters have become less popular in today’s digital age, but during the holiday season, receiving something in the mail can be a nice surprise. Over the years, Miles realizes people still get excited when receiving something in the mail.

“I think people are craving it more than ever. It is just as important as a gift and a lot of people do not express their genuine love for their friends and family, so this is the time to do so.”

Miles’ holiday prints and other artwork are available on her website

Hotel Vancouver’s holiday shop is located in their lobby and includes smaller prints of Miles’ painting for sale. Other retail offerings include custom Hotel Vancouver Christmas tree ornaments and Hotel Vancouver x Park’s Best dog collars, ‘Warm Buddies’ Ella and Elly stuffed animals and Fairmont gift cards.
