The Playlist: DJ Duo Common People Do the Dishes to Justice and Watch Bad Boys on Repeat

What do DJs Adam Fink and Bryan Sea tune into when they're not behind the deck at the Fox? The duo shares their pop culture playlist.

DJ duo Common People (Adam Fink and Bryan Sea) spin at the Fox every Saturday night. Here’s what’s on their pop-culture radar right now.

What’s your favourite musical genre right now and why?

B: I honestly can’t get enough of Disco and House. I have a separate project where I’ve been writing a lot of house music so any time I have an opportunity to sneak in some cheeky house or disco I take it.

A: I don’t have an absolute fave. I listen to a lot of music. Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, whatever. If it catches my attention, I’m in.

Any song, band, or album you can’t get enough of?

B: I probably listen to WWW by Justice once a week from back to front. It’s a really good kitchen chores album.

A: I was obsessed with Charli XCX all summer. Brat is so fun.

Your go-to song that always lifts your mood?

B: Anything by Dua Lipa, especially off the Future Nostalgia album. just puts me in a good mood.

If you were DJing a party, what’s the must-play song?

B: Anything by Abba, honestly. “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme Gimme” are instant dance-floor igniters.

 Go-to karaoke song?

B: Adam and I have been known to sing “Mr. Brightside” together.

Favourite podcast right now?

A: No Dunks because I love basketball and listening to people talk about it!

Favourite TV show or recent binge-watch?

B: I actually just started watching The Sopranos for the first time. I really couldn’t tell you why it’s taken me this long.

A: I just watched this show with Colin Farrell called Sugar. I thought it was a detective show but it has an insane twist that, I’m not sure if it was a good decision, but it made it kind of a hilarious watch.

Guilty pleasure reality TV show?

B: I can’t get enough of Vanderpump Rules. I worked in service for a really long time, so it’s really funny to see character archetypes of people I used to work with.

Last movie that blew you away?

B: Bad Boys, and I’m sure Adam will say the same thing and elaborate.

A: Bad Boys. Those movies are kind of unhinged and they really surprise me for what they are supposed to be. It’s nonsense and I love it.

Favourite movie of all time and why?

B: Rumble In The Bronx with Jackie Chan. My dad immigrated here from Hong Kong, so when I watch it I get this connection not only with his story, my Asian heritage and a good representation of the Asian-American struggle to assimilate That movie was also filmed in my hometown of Vancouver, so it’s really fun to see and remember how the city looked back in the ’90s.

A: The original Halloween from the ’70s. I love horror movies and I love Halloween and they just created the best atmosphere with this one. Spooky times!

Favourite YouTube channel you tune into regularly?

B: I watch a ton of Bthelick on Youtube. He has, hands down, the greatest Ableton and music theory tutorials that I’ve found. It’s not only made me a better songwriter but a better DJ.

A: I really like the stuff My Analog Journal does. It’s all vinyl DJs in a very lovely studio full of plants just playing fun sets of a variety of different genres.

Most fun live arts/culture event recently?

A: A pal gave me a ticket to go see LCD Soundsystem and it was really cool to see eight people on stage recreating those songs with no tracks just all real instrumentation and musicianship. Plus who doesn’t love a dance party?!?

Favourite book, series, or author?

A: I love biographies. Just read the Steve Martin one and the Beastie Boys one and they’re just interesting looks into peoples creative process.

Any video games, apps, or board games you’re obsessed with? Any classics you love revisiting?

B: I’m definitely the gamer of the group. Adam and I spent a lot of time in our Covid Bubble playing Spider-Man and The Last Of Us series of games. We also do a weekly get together with some buddies and play a D&D board game called Tyrants Of The Underdark.

A: I love Tyrants of the Underdark. Normally D&D stuff is of no interest to me, but it’s super fun and well designed and a great excuse to hang out with some pals every week.

What do you play to unwind or relax?

B: I really like Chess Puzzles. They kind of just set my brain right.

A: Sometimes I put on the Spider-Man video games just to swing through the city. It’s really fun.
