New four-wheeled competitors have taken to the streets with alarming frequency of late, but last year’s top two winners held their own in this category. Our judges still consider Tacofino (Gold)—one of the first regional food carts to set tongues wagging and bloggers blogging—a case study of first-rate mobile food purveyance. “From a gravel lot in Tofino, it’s come a long way,” commends a judge. The Vancouver-based truck retains the focus that made it famous: tacos, of course, with crispy ling cod or tender pork al pastor, plus a few bulging burritos and crave-worthy banana churros. Vij’s Railway Express (Silver) offers downtown office workers portable variations of the trail-blazing flavour combinations that have made our Chef of the Year’s restaurants world-famous; panko-crusted butter chicken schnitzel paired with an iced chai makes a rote weekday lunch break sublime. Yolk’s (Bronze) proves that anytime can be breakfast time when all the components of a top-notch eggs Benny are mounded onto a sturdy ciabatta bun (be careful biting down) and served with organic coffee or—swoon!—ice-cold milk blended with Callebaut chocolate. Honourable Mentions: Le Tigre, Soho Road Naan Kebab
