It was Korea and China all the way on Saturday night at men’s 1,000-metre and women’s 1,500-metre short track. For the women, Yang Zhou showed remarkable stamina in her gold-medal finish, breaking existing records for this distance. Second and third place went to Koreans Eun-Byui Lee and Seung-Hi Park; the strategy that night to break up the Koreans around the track never materialized. Canadian hopeful Tania Vicent ran out of steam and finished last.
In men’s short track, again it was the Korean powerhouse to beat, this time Jung-Su Lee and Ho-Suk Lee, two aggressive skaters who couldn’t be separated at the end, leaving American Apolo Ohno with bronze, a seventh medal for his hardware chest and the highest number (if not the most valuable) in Winter Olympics history. The Great Canuck Hopes, the Hamelin brothers (François and Charles) rounded out the finals, but didn’t make the podium.
