A Nineties Night

The ’90s hit Danish band Aqua has reunited for the 20th anniversary of hit song “Barbie Girl,” and they’re swinging through the Abbotsford Centre to cure your Monday blues. The Rewind Tour will be the first time the group has come to Canada, accompanied by Canadian animated duo Prozzäk and “Another Day” singer Whigfield. A Painting Process

September 12-13

Sometimes art is a long, arduous process that takes years of tweaks and revisions–and sometimes, it’s not. Watch Vancouver Film School alumni Bobby Mathieson make art before your eyes during his exhibit called Natural Plotline. Mathieson will be using an Italian technique called alla prima (“at first attempt”) in his paintings. Translation: all of the paintings will be done in one session, from start to finish. The artist will be painting one piece for each of the first two days, and the exhibition itself continues until October 20.When: Wednesday, September 12 – Thursday, September 13Where: Betamax GalleryCost: FreeMore Info: facebook.com (Photo: YVR Food Fest.)

A Mexican Market

September 15

Chow down on churros, sip on micheladas, and celebrate Mexican Independence Day at Market Mexico. This free festival embraces the spirit of the Mexican market (or mercado), which has been a cultural fixture in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times. Mexican-inspired clothing, jewelry and artisanal items will be available for purchase, as well as all the tacos your heart desires and wallet allows. When: Saturday, September 15 11:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.Where: Robson SquareCost: FreeMore Info: marketmexico.ca (Photo: HUB Cycling.)

A Star Cycle

September 15

Enjoy a motor vehicle-free bike ride through Vancouver with more than 5,000 other cycling-savvy participants at Bike the Night. Some of our city’s most iconic roadways will be shut down for this event, and there’s a pre-party complete with a DJ, kids zone, and food trucks for those pre-cycle cravings. This 10-kilometre journey is a “slow roll,” not a race–but if you’re looking for a challenge, we suggest seeing how many glow sticks you can attach to your bike/helmet/body.When:  Saturday, September 15, 7:45 p.m.Where: Concord Pacific PlaceCost: From $10More Info: bikehub.ca (Photo: BeLive Fitness Vancouver.)

A Fitness Frolic

September 12

You won’t be embarrassed by a sweaty brow at this unique nightclub event. BeLive Fitness Night Club Experience features a live DJ and fitness instructors leading you through 60 minutes of body-weight exercises. We assume the end goal is to burn enough calories on Wednesday to have several guilt-free highballs in Friday’s more traditional nightclub setting. When: Wednesday September 12, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.Where: Venue NightclubCost: $25More Info: eventbrite.ca
