5 Fabulous Events Happening in Vancouver This Week (Jan. 21-27)
Flowers, food trucks and funny feminists ahead.
January 21, 2019
January 21 – 27
Get your stretchy pants on – Street Food City is returning this week, and you’re definitely going to need some extra room. This week-long food truck event is like Dine Out Vancouver’s younger, more adventurous sister, and features mobile eats from Chickpea, Reel Mac and Cheese, Tacofino and more.
LOL with WTF
January 24 – 26
Laugh and learn with Vancouver’s top WTF (woman, trans, femme) comedians at Smash Comedy Fest, a new feminist comedy extravaganza with performances, workshops, and the Carly-Rae-Jepsen-est afterparties you’ve ever attended. We’ll be there cheering on Stacey McLachlan, our very own executive editor by day, executive jokester by night.
Rhythm & (No) Shoes
Get a free music lesson and full-body workout at this beginner’s Taiko Drumming Workshop. Miyake Taiko is a 200-year-old art form famous for its longevity – groups of drummers can keep a beat going for days. This is an active workshop, so make sure you wear comfy clothes and non-slip shoes (or none at all)!
If you’re all about that brass, UBC’s Brassfest is the only place to be this weekend. Trumpeting power-couple Mary Elizabeth Bowen and David Dash (otherwise known as the Dash Duo) will be teaching workshops on entrepreneurship and the psychology of improvement, as well as a spotlight performance featuring the VSO Trombone Duo and UBC Brass Faculty Quintet.
Shop & Sniff
Get your flower fix at the I Heart Tulips event this weekend, where 10,000 live tulips will be blooming in an unlikely haven: Metrotown Mall. In the afternoon, shoppers will be permitted to pick the tulips in exchange for a donation to Variety Children’s Charity. You can treat your insta-story and a child in need all in one trip to the mall.
