Sigur Rós at Deer Lake Park

Sigur Rós is having a big year. The Icelandic ambient post-rockers are marking the 19th anniversary of the band’s formation with a massive tour of North America, Europe and Asia that started last July and will stretch until the end of November. Their seventh studio album, Kveikur, is due out June 17 (at which point they’ll likely be just landing in Dresden, Germany). And on May 19, lead vocalist and guitarist Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson, drummer Orri Páll Dýrason, and bassist Georg “Goggi” Holm will make their first cameo appearances on The Simpsons season 24 finale. Our chance to experience the trio will be under the stars at Deer Lake Park in Burnaby on May 27, a fitting venue for their euphorically hip tunes sung mostly in Icelandic, with some in a made-up language called “Hopelandic” – a vocal gibberish that mostly serves as additional instrumentation. Not bad for a group who painted the studio in exchange for recording their first album. For tickets, visit: Ticketmaster.ca
