Pasta for the Soul

April 1, 2009

Giuseppe’s Bread and Deli
3596 E. Hastings St., 604-299-2316

The menu may consist of a crumpled piece of paper in Giuseppe’s pocket, but the homemade pastas and tender meat dishes that come out of his kitchen belong in a high-end room.

Epicurean Caffé
1898 W. First Ave., 604-731-5370, Epicureancaffe.com

The room is small and usually crowded, the tables cheek-by-jowl. Excellent for cappuccino and superb canoli, and if you show up at lunch time you’ll find a selection of pasta and meat dishes that are dependably delicious.

Bosa’s
1465 Kootenay St., 604-253-5578, Bosafoods.com

Don’t let the Costco-like warehouse deter you—Bosa’s has been supplying fine ingredients to Vancouver’s Italian community, and fans of Italian cuisine, since 1957. Spend some quality time at the deli counter.

La Cucina
1509 Marine Dr., North Van, 604-986-1334

Straightforward, traditional, not at all flashy—just like Tiberio Faeto, the owner. Killer wine list. Everyone goes for the carpaccio, but don’t overlook the veal with mushrooms.

Osteria Napoli
1660 Renfrew St., 604-255-6441, Osterianapoli.com

No fuss, no muss—just familiglia-friendly service and an array of rustic Sicilian dishes. Once a month they roast a suckling pig, and the staff parades it around the room.
