Model Citizen: Linda Hipp

Women’s golfwear had a serious case of plaid pants-itis when Linda Hipp came on the scene in 1997. Easter egg hues and matronly argyles abounded, but modern and stylish was left to the Nike crowd. An avid golfer who flirted with the idea of joining the professional tour, Hipp instead opted to marry entrepreneurial spirit with her inner fashionista to launch LIJA, fusing European runway styles with high-performance fabrics to produce feminine golf clothes. Today, Hipp is still at the helm, pushing boundaries in running, training, tennis, and yoga wear, as well as on the links.

What are you crazy for this spring?  Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. I love the asymmetric art deco and quirky floral influence. Nothing beats the perfect floral frock star just in time for spring.

One thing you could never throw away?  My beautiful pair of gold strappy Valentino heels from the last season under his watch. I don’t wear them often, but they’re gorgeous, festive, and a sentimental favourite.

What did you listen to as a kid?  Embarrassing! Depeche Mode, Yaz’s Upstairs at Eric’s, The Clash. The musicians and bands that inspire me now are Coldplay, my all-time favourite, and lately I’ve been listening to Band of Horses. Their new acoustic album is beyond beautiful.

Are you a homebody or a party girl?  There was a time when I would have said party girl, but these days I’m happy to go with homebody. My favourite date is my five-year-old.

If you won the lottery?  I’d buy an apartment in Le Marais, Paris.

Best style advice?  Don’t try too hard.

Favourite style of jeans?  R13 slouchy boyfriends & skinnys all the way.

And pieces of clothing?  It’s a split between staples and special pieces: a black Veda leather biker jacket; Carven suede pumps; a Clover Canyon neoprene pencil skirt; a Vanessa Bruno leather day bag. Go-anywhere staples are the hero pieces of my walk-in.

What’s your favourite perfume?  I’m not a perfume girl, but I love Origins Ginger Soufflé.

Where do you love to shop?  My favourite women’s clothing stores are Misch, Rebecca Bree, JNBY, and Gravity Pope. I always hit Madison, Intermix, Fred Segal, and American Rag when I’m in L.A.

Three things that are always in your fridge?  Fresh berries, Liberty organic coconut yogurt, and a bottle of Persecco.

Choice wines? Montelana Chardonnay, Saint Jean du Barroux La Montagne, and Carlo Negri  Sfursat. They remind me of my travels, my friends. I’m a big believer in celebrating the small moments in a big way.

What art do you feel closest to?  A piece commissioned from Patty Ampleford, an oil on canvas of the view from our cabin on the Sunshine Coast. It hangs in my home office and gives me motivation and inspiration. I’ve been going to our cabin all my life, and it’s the one place where I truly power down. It gives me total peace and happiness when I look at it.

Where do you get unexpected inspiration?  From my Tom Dixon Etch candleholder. It’s a small metallic geodesic shape with a really interesting texture, and I love the shadows that it throws when it’s lit.

Hostess gifts?  I always bring Voluspa candles — they’re fresh and luxe, but unfussy. Throw a piece of pretty twine around the box and you’re done.

How about when you travel. What are the must-takes?  I always pack Ray Ban aviators, Repetto flats, a giant floaty scarf.

Where do you go?  My favourite vacation destination is Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Cabo San Lucas for a tropical getaway. Other faves are New York, Paris, and Lake Como.

And what do you bring back?  The most interesting souvenir I found was a lovely basket bag at a Sunday market in Provence last year.  It was a major sacrifice to get it home, but it’s the perfect fusion of practical and chic.

Fave foodstuffs?  My most recent are Arbequina olive oil from the Vancouver Olive Oil Company, organic Cream of Earl Grey from David’s Tea, and Earnest ice cream from their headquarters on Fraser Street.

Where do you eat out?  I love Homer Street Cafe because it’s beautifully designed, always bustling, and reminds me of a perfect fusion between New York and Paris.

Where do you send out-of-town guests?  It’s a tie between L’Abbatoir in Gastown and Bao Bei in Chinatown, followed by cocktails at the Keefer.

What do you do when you’re feeling indulgent?  I go for a hot stone massage at Spa on the Rocks, a facial at Breathe Spa, or cheesy pizza at The Bibo or Steak Frites at Jules.

What’s on your nightstand?  I always have a perpetual stack of mags (Vanity Fair; Australian, British, and American Vogue; New York magazine; and Fast Company). Also cherry chapstick, a water carafe, and a giant eye mask.

And what’s on your mantle?  Family photos, always.

What’s your favourite book?  Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

What should every fashionable woman own this season? Perforated Booties! Tan versions are fab for spring.
