( 1 ) The Wolf and Hound  More grandfather’s den than booze hall, this is the perfect place to recline in overstuffed wingbacks and catch up with your crew. Warm up with an Irish Sampler or save stomach-space with their Limerick Lager before heading out into woollier climates. 3617 West Broadway; 604-738-8909. Thewolfandhound.com

( 2 ) Elwoods  Elwoods wears its charm on its sleeve (along with a few ketchup stains). Ignore the backbreaking stools and absorb the good cheer, pint specials, and excellently drippy burgers. The most genuine watering hole on the Alma—Macdonald strip. Arrive early before it gets too crowded. 3141 West Broadway; 604-736-4301.

( 3 ) The Fringe Café  A breather from the bacchanalia on the north side of Broadway. Check out microbrews Dirty Girl and Ugly Boy or ask the friendly bartender to recommend one of their 14 single malts. The locals come here for the locals so expect low-key drinking comfort. 3124 West Broadway; 604-738-6977. Fringecafe.ca

( 4 ) Tatlow’s Broiler Bar  Dark walls and severe furniture belie a spirited drinking room with friendly staff. The 12 brews on tap, including local pleasure Red Truck lager, and killer mojitos are good news for those with their eye on the prize. The fireside couch has been retired to make room for some stand-up guitar gigs. 2741 West 4th; 604-739-8668.

( 5 ) Lola’s Cabaret  After an admittedly pubby crawl, it’s time to shake your music maker. Top 40s, cheap high balls, and plenty o’ groove space makes this second-floor lounge-come-dance club an oasis for Kits booty shakers in a neighbourhood otherwise known for its sit-downs. Expect a UBC crowd eagerly lining up around 10:30. 2291 West Broadway; 604-733-7989.
