A crowd of 6,000 witnessed the final career skate of Clara Hughes of Glen Sutton, Quebec. Today’s bronze brings Hughes, 37, to six medals, won at both Summer (cycling) and Winter Games. Hughes finished nearly five seconds behind silver medallist Stephanie Beckert of Germany, herself three-quarters of a second behind Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republich, who took gold. All three completed the gruelling five-kilometre run in under seven minutes.
In these shots: Clara Hughes takes a triumphant bronze in front of an adoring crowd; Hughes with coach Xiuli Wang; and three medal winners.
