Craft Beer for Canada Day
June 30, 2010
Skookum Cascadian Brown Ale B.C. beer drinkers know that Victoria’s Philips Brewery is the go-to for taste-bud-tingling craft beers. Firefly has the largest selection in town but set your sights on Skookum, a bold re-branding by Philips of their Black Toque I.PA. It has a semi-aggressive hop profile that indulgently walks the line between I.P.A and porter. Look for the tree on the label. 6.5% in a 650 ml bottle. At Firefly, 2857 Cambie St., 604-875-3325. Russel I.P’eh! Because it wouldn’t be Canada Day without an “eh” pun. Look for the large Canada Day display at this little gem of a liquor store that has a great selection of craft beers. Surrey’s Russell Brewing Company recently won bronze at the prestigious Brewers Association World Beer Cup for this American-style I.P.A. The beer itself has great hop character with a pleasant grapefruit acidity. 6.5% in a 650 ml bottle. Libations Wine and Beer, 962 W. King Edward Ave., 604-739-9463.
“King Heffy” Imperial Heffewiezen from Squamish’s Howe Sound Brewery. Brewery Creek has a vast selection of cold brews ready to be transported right to your Canada Day destination. “King Heffy” is a badass German Heffe (7.7% in a 1 litre format!) that will have you thinking bananas, cloves, and all round good times. It just came out in bottle form on June 15 so chances are you’ll be the first to show it round to your fellow beer loving compatriots. Brewery Creek, 3045 Main St., 604-872-3373.
