Best Vietnamese 2013
May 1, 2013
GOLD: PHNOM PENH
Silver: Pho Tan | Bronze: Pho Thai Hoa | Honourable Mentions: Au Petit Café, Lam Hoa Quan
Family-run Phnom Penh (Gold) is an institution, a must-visit for any self-respecting Vancouverite. You could spend hours perusing the encyclopedic menu of Vietnamese and Cambodian dishes, but do what your neighbours are doing and order the butter beef and deep-fried squid with lemon pepper dipping sauce.
"The broth at Pho Tan makes it worth a trip"-and a Silver award, according to our judges, who never leave without an order of grilled chicken scented with lemongrass.
The bright, clean broth at Pho Thai Hoa (Bronze) cures all that ails; our judges praised the redemptive powers of the chicken noodle soup.
Honourable Mentions to Au Petit Café for the city's best banh mi, and to Lam Hoa Quan for premier beef pho lifted by gingery broth.
