In the caffeine arms race, nobody has stockpiled better roasts, more knowledgeable baristas, or more opinionated and invested customers than Gastown’s Revolver Coffee (Gold), which jumps from last year’s bridesmaid berth. Excellence is all about choice: select from a rotating roster of roasts from Berlin, Portland, San Francisco, and more; sample flights, including vertical brewings of one bean three ways. With added room next door, the spot’s only problem (limited seating) has been solved. Timbertrain Coffee Roasters (Silver) kills it with creamy nitro’d cold brews and home-roasted beans served fast (for those on the clock) or hand-poured slow. Bonus: delish pastries. (Don’t think—just order the maple waffle.) In all the hoopla, let’s not forget original Forty Ninth Parallel (Bronze), consistent especially in its beautifully rendered espressos to be drunk standing amid all those beautiful shades of blue. Honourable Mentions: Milano Coffee, Lear Faye Espresso Kitchen (closed)
