Local stylists share their favourite wedding 'dos.
Hair up, or down, that is the question. To make it easier (or maybe even harder…sorry?) we got some of the best wedding hairstylists in the city to share the bridal looks they’re loving. Classic, modern or ethereal—be inspired by these artful wedding coifs.

“Meghan has been known to rock a casual look with elegance and ease,” says Leo Redavid, creator of Redavid Salon Products, and the royal wedding was no exception. Markle—ahem, the Duchess of Sussex—eschewed a classic blowout for her signature messy bun; she donned a polished tiara-topped style for the ceremony and then embraced a more relaxed ‘do with loose, face-framing tendrils for the reception. We can only expect that brides everywhere will be trying to replicate the look all summer.
Style Tips: Redavid recommends you use a volumizing spray (for va-va-voom roots) and a round brush while blow drying to help control flyaways. Then simply pull hair back, remembering to leave a few loose pieces, and secure with a lightweight hairspray.
“Romantic loose curls—with the right amount of volume—are so soft and pretty for a bride,” says Denise Elliott, owner of Denise Elliott Beauty Co. “It’s nice to have hair slightly out of the face, too.”
Style Tips: Elliott recommends using dry shampoo and other products to ensure this look will hold throughout the day and into the evening (even in less-than-ideal weather conditions).
“We’re loving the addition of bright, large florals pinned into a low, textured up-do,” says The Glamoury founder AJ Woodworth. “The mix of colour and texture creates a comtemporary-yet-traditional look.”
Style Tips: If you have thin hair, Woodworth recommends using clip-in extensions to add fullness. To keep those flowers looking fresh, lightly mist them with hairspray.
“Braids will never go out of style (in my opinion),” says freelance stylist Jen Mathison. “I love a look that will stay in place throughout the day, but still has an undone vibe. This braid has more of an editorial feel—it’s not too ‘bridal.’”
Style Tips: Start with wavy hair (either natural or wand-curled) for texture and volume. When you’re done braiding, go back and loosen pieces until you get the shape you’re looking for.

Hairstylist Nadia Albano, founder of Nadia Albano Style Inc., loves the versatility of this chic bun: “It’s elegant and refined enough for a black-tie wedding, yet romantic and rustic enough for a casual garden wedding.”
Style Tips: To create volume, Albano recommends starting off by gently brushing back the crown area. Then use lots of bobby pins and a few spritzes of working hairspray to keep this ‘do in place.

Stephanie Alvarez, owner of Muse Beauty Co. says more and more brides are requesting this look (which just so happens to be one of her personal faves): “The loose waves coupled with the elevated swoop in the front is perfect for brides wanting a vintage look with a modern twist.”
Style Tips: Once your curls are set (Alvarez recommends curling hair in the same direction with a ¾-inch iron), backcomb the front section and then use a paddle brush to achieve your desired shape.

“We love this effortlessly casual boho bridal looks for its loose, messy waves,” says Save the Date Beauty‘s Shaina Webb of this half-up twisted ‘do.
Style Tips: To keep this style from looking too formal, Webb recommends using a flat iron to create loose waves; face-framing pieces complete the soft, romantic effect.

“I love this look,” says Jenny Ruth, owner of Mink Makeup and Hair. “It’s classic, timeless and can be glammed-up with hair accessories.”
Style Tips: For tight curls like this, Ruth recommends using hot rollers or a one-inch curling iron. For the hot-roller method, roll hair in the same direction and then position them horizontally to create volume; if using a curling iron, set each curl with a bobby pin until it cools.
Hair by Meenu Gill, Fancy Face Inc.
For Fancy Face Inc.’s Meenu Gill, this is the perfect up-do for a hot summer wedding: “I love that this look keeps hair away from your face and off your neck for the big day,” she says. “The messiness and volume on the crown of the head elongates the face while the loose pieces on the side softens the look.”
Style Tips: To keep this style from looking too stiff, Gill recommends gently tugging along your hairline from the top to just above the ears to loosen any short layers.
