There’s a lovely contradiction at play in this beautifully designed Gastown café. Owners Peter Kim and Jeff and Min Shin all loved trains as kids. They also loved coffee (if loved is a strong enough word for hobbyists who visited plantations on holiday), so they combined West Coast timber with their favourite mode of transport and have opened an amalgamation of the slow (old trains, handcrafting) and the fast (modern design, caffeine). Their love of beans and the artisinal process mean you have time and expertise available to enjoy a deep counterside conversation about the few cold presses and slow-pours on the menu. Think cool communal seating smooth, balanced drinks and good pastries. If trains are your jam, by the way, make a day of it: Platform 7 on East Hastings, then here, then finish up at the Railway Club. All aboard!
