Railtown

Railtown is as much an idea as it is a place: it’s the name for the hip design and tech boom currently taking place on the formerly-ignored industrial northern fringe of the Downtown Eastside. The draw is office space cheaper than in Gastown, the neighbouring former startup hotspot. After budding tech firms, most notably Hootsuite, set up shop there, trendy restaurants and cafes followed. Now new residential projects are also in the works. Railtown’s development hasn’t been without anti-gentrification controversy, but it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.
