Wunderkind composer Nico Muhly explores a taboo subject

Dark Sisters comes to the Playhouse Theatre

It may be an American opera, but Dark Sisters could hardly feel more local. The community of Bountiful, B.C., and its leader, Winston Blackmore, lurk in the background of every scene of Nico Muhly’s study of a polygamous family thrown into crisis as the children are taken into state care and the patriarch makes for the desert to seek guidance from God. Amiel Gladstone directs, with soprano Melanie Krueger playing Eliza, the wife whose revelations to a TV crew precipitate a crisis within the family.
