the finer points of gourmet cheese. 2104 W. 41st

VANCOUVER ISLAND
HILARY'S CHEESE AND DELI
Cheesemaker Hilary Abbot has settled in nicely with
his own cafe, offering over 100 artisanal cheeses, including
his own farmgate specialties. Belle Ann, a goat’s
milk chevre washed in Cherry Point Vineyards blackberry
port is queen, with cheese curds equally regal. Order
from the daily cheeseboard, served with a crusty baguette
from neighbour True Grain. 1737 Cowichan Bay Rd.,
250-748-5992.
NATURAL PASTURES
Milk is sourced solely from Island farms practicing
sustainable farming and environmental stewardship. Over
13 varieties, with many small-batch treats like the
much-anticipated Fairburn Farm water buffalo mozzarella.
We love boerenkaas, a luscious semi-hard Dutch treat,
and the Island-grown wasabi verdelait, a zippy blend
of cheddar. Can ship Canada-wide. 635 McPhee Rd.,
Courtenay, 250-334-4422, 866-244-4422.
