Yaletown’s New Pie Store

When Stanislava Oben and her family moved from Slovakia to Canada in 1995, she fell in love with traditional North American pies, but she felt they often lacked the “lightness and melt-in-your-mouth quality” of the pastries she had enjoyed in Europe. After studying under German-born master pastry chef Marco Ropke, she and husband Christopher opened Lime & Moon Pie Company on Bowen Island in 2012. The venture has been such a success that the couple launches a second location, in Yaletown (“The focal point of Vancouver’s downtown food scene,” she says), early this month. Using local, organic ingredients whenever possible, she aims to “combine the sophistication of European pastry with the wholesomeness of the North American pie”—a mandate that applies to creations like chocolate-crusted walnut pie, cranberry shortbread, and savoury tourtière. A percentage of all sales goes to local and international charities.LIME & MOON PIE COMPANY1066 Mainland St. Limeandmoon.com
