It can be a fun but bumpy road, being a wine drinker. You have a bottle of Okanagan pinot gris that you like and then you have another with the same grape from the same year but a different producer and it tastes entirely different. Or you shell out some big $$$ for a California cabernet that’s been getting monster scores, but when you open it, it’s so big and brutish that it’s tough to enjoy. The fact is that even within the realm of “well-made wine,” there are huge stylistic swings that will greatly impact whether you enjoy a given bottle. Many wine critics love the bracing acidity of a bone dry-riesling but a look at riesling sales will show you that most members of the drinking public do not. So VanMag has partnered with Earls and their erudite sommelier David Stansfield to craft a tasting that will help you navigate this fermented minefield. David will select a serious of wines that will help you figure out whether your palate skews towards the more traditional—think French Bordeaux—or the more radical—think natural wine. All the wines will be excellent examples—it’ll be like the Stones vs. the Beatles, or Blur vs. Oasis or, Tupac vs. Biggie—so all you need to do is taste and decided.
