Break your Resolutions Early

Monday, January 1

Juke’s Fried Chicken is back with its second year of “Cluck Away your Resolutions,” offering a tempting and deep-fried menu to banish your hangover blues. Expect such delicacies as jalapeno-cheddar waffles and fried chicken, and biscuits with whipped schmaltz for eat-in or take-out.

When: 12 to 9 p.m.

Fall in Amore with Italian Film

January 5 to January 11

The Vancouver Italian Film Festival is playing at the Vancity Theatre with a plethora of Italian films both new and old. Of note are Federico Fellini’s classic La Strada and Spettacolo, a documentary by Jeff Malmberg and Chris Shellen about the people of a small town in Tuscany who have turned their lives into a play for the last 50 years.

When: January 5 to 11

Get into the Swing of Things

Saturday, January 6

Cross something off your resolution list early this year and learn a new skill at Hot Club Swing. Put on by the Vancouver Swing Society, Hot Club Swing features a beginners’ class followed by music and dancing for all levels and features swinging DJs and live bands. If you can’t quite make it out of the house yet, Hot Club Swing happens every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month.

When: 7 p.m.
Where: Roundhouse Community Centre, 181 Roundhouse Mews
Cost: $8 to $15

Face the Ch-ch-ch-changes

Saturday, January 6

Dawn your Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit, grab some glitter for a friend and celebrate the life and music of David Bowie at the Rickshaw’s Theatre’s Bowie Ball. Over 20 bands will be performing along with prizes for best costume and a face paint station. Proceeds will go to support the Canadian Cancer Society.

When: 7 p.m.
Where: The Rickshaw Theatre, 254 E. Hastings St.

Walk the Red Carpet

Sunday, January 7

End your week right at The Rio Theatre’s screening of the 75th Annual Golden Globes. Complete with a red carpet, trivia, prizes and the chance to dress up like a movie star this is one glamorous way to “do you” at the beginning of the year. Be sure to arrive early as this event fills up quickly!

When: Doors open 4:00 p.m., show starts 5:00 p.m.
Where: The Rio Theatre, 1660 E. Broadway
Cost: Free (this event is 19+)
