We Found the Most Fun Activity in Vancouver
It involves a band, beer and tons of sweat, but it’s not a concert.

It’s Friday night in Vancouver and you’re in the mood to mingle. Maybe get a few drinks, hear some music, dance with some people and just generally enjoy life.
So where do you go?
Well, you go to the Wise Hall. That’s where, on the first Friday of every month, you can find that most delicious mix of old-school folk and gym class: square dancing.
And yes, I may be turning 30 later this year and maybe that’s why I’m recommending this rather than, I don’t know, anything involving the Granville Strip in any capacity.
But down at the Wise Hall you might actually engage with someone other than the same five people you parade around downtown with every weekend. Imagine that.
Sure, it’s a bit awkward at the start, especially if you didn’t come with an assumed partner. But it doesn’t take long to get into it. The caller takes the front of the stage and talks you through each dance with surprising clarity. A live string ensemble gets the mood going, and it’s not long before you’re swinging around the place.
You will sweat. You will drink. And you won’t stop smiling.
And, if you’re single, I guarantee there are less promising places to spend a Friday night.
So next time you’re wandering around the city aimlessly on the first Friday of the month, check your ego at the door (along with your credit card, you better believe it’s cash only) and have one of the most fun nights you’ll have in this city.
Plaid isn’t mandatory, but it doesn’t hurt.
