Celebrate National Aboriginal Day

Wednesday, June 21

Join celebrations across Canada to honour Indigenous culture and diversity this National Aboriginal Day by heading down to the beautiful Trout Lake Park. This full day event is open to all and will feature bannock (including bannock tacos), canoe tours, live music, dancers, scavenger hunts, a sacred fire ceremony and much more!

When: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Groove to Seu Jorge at the Jazz Festival

The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival runs from June 22 to July 2. Whether you are a jazz aficionado or beginner there is plenty to enjoy; from big names like Branford Marsalis, to intimate shows at local bars and a full weekend of free outdoor concerts. One highlight is Brazilian musician Seu Jorge, known for his appearances in City of God and The Life Aquatic. In Seu Jorge Presents: The Life Aquatic – A Tribute To David Bowie, Jorge takes up his incredible samba infused covers of the late David Bowie.

Pay Tribute to a Great Storyteller

Thursday, June 22

Known for his humorous stories and love of music, CBC Host of Vinyl Café fame Stuart Mclean passed away this year. To celebrate his legacy and lasting influence on the art of storytelling, the Rio presents, Vinyl Cabaret: A Tribute to Stuart Mclean, a night of storytelling and local music. Performers include TJ Dawe, Jo Dworschak and Duncan Shields.

When: 8 p.m.

Cheer on Dragon Boat Racers

Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25

You may have heard their drums and shouts echoing across False Creek, now it’s your chance to cheer on determined paddlers at the Concord Pacific Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival as they race and raise funds for the charity. While you’re at it, enjoy live music at the World Beat Stage, take a break at the beer garden or check out circus performances and a family fun zone.

Go Behind the Scenes

Saturday, June 24

Ever wondered what those glowing chimneys are by the Cambie Street Bridge, or what’s inside the Vancouver Police Mounted Division Unit (hint: it’s horses)? Doors Open Vancouver provides behind-the-scenes access to some of the most interesting and mysterious buildings in the city. Spaces include the Marine Building, the 3-1-1 Call Centre, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Training Centre and the Orpheum Theatre. Tours are first come first served.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
