The Ticket: Support Canada’s Refugees at UBC’s Annual Winter Benefit Gala
UBC's International Relations Students Association aims to make a difference at 14th annual winter gala.
February 7, 2017
It’s only February, but 2017 has already been bumpy. If you’re looking to make a difference locally, UBC’s International Relations Students Association (IRSA) is hosting their 14th annual Winter Benefit Gala in association with Kinbrace, a local Vancouver non-profit that provides housing and other support to refugees who are new to Canada.
The event will feature prominent local speakers, including lawyer and refugee advocate, Lesley Stalker, and Lobat Sadrehashem, a refugee and immigration lawyer, who will be sharing personal stories and speaking about the challenges and opportunities refugees encounter. Guests will also get to indulge in a three-course buffet meal and enjoy performances by UBC’s a capella group and local musicians Rikibeaz, Ohi Akpengbe and Alex Lim—and have the chance to participate in a raffle and silent auction, bidding for prizes such as paddle board rentals, a one night stay at Fairmont Chateau Whistler, and spa packages from Luxe Beauty Lounge.
Funds raised by the gala will contribute to the translation of Kinbrace’s Refugee Hearing Preparation Guide into Sorani (Iraqi Kurdish) for refugees new to Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Tickets are $40 for UBC students and $50 for the general public.
