Restoring historic homes is a delicate process. A heavy hand can rob a structure of its defining characteristics, while too light of a touch might leave future inhabitants cravings the conveniences of today.

Set in the heart of Seattle’s Fort Lawton in Discovery Park, the Officer’s Row Homes exemplify a thoughtful and successful renovation project by a world-class team led by Vancouver-based RISE Properties. Through a thoughtful collaboration with the city of Seattle, Officer’s Row represents a true revival of the area’s distinct history.

Here’s how the team behind the renovation brought these gorgeous homes into the present, without letting go of the past.

Respecting the History

While collaborating with the City of Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board, RISE Properties also engaged a team of design professionals from GGLO Design to ensure the renovations were authentic to both the period and the original intentions of the homes. They made it their goal to create an un-marred continuum where modern updates fit seamlessly with the historic materials and details of each space.

The renovation process preserved much of the original structures as well as unique historic features like original millwork, moldings, stair railings, wood floors, fireplace features, doors and hardware.

Respecting the Surroundings

Overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, Discovery Park is Seattle’s 534-acre crown jewel. It features rolling meadows, forest groves, striking cliffs, bubbling streams, 12 miles of verdant trails, two miles of driftwood-strewn beaches, a landmark lighthouse and spectacular views.

The local flora and fauna of the area influences the color palettes and design preserved corridors of Officer’s Row. Grand porches take advantage of scenic views and exterior design elements remain true to the original architecture, while enhancing it with careful landscaping, maintaining the integrity of the entire historic district as a key part of Fort Lawton.

Working In the Modern Features that Matter

As part of the renovations, RISE Properties added the large closets, spacious master bathrooms, downstairs powder rooms and laundry rooms that today’s buyers depend upon. These updates were executed carefully so that modern features could provide comfort and convenience without detracting from the authentic historic charm of the original structures, while also providing a more pleasant, livable and functional interior space for its residents.
