Lush’s Gorilla Gallery is a Perfume Play Land

Cosmetics giant Lush takes a break from bathbombing to bring us a pop-up interactive perfume exhibition like no other.

We are so used to seeing Scarlett Johansson running around the cobbled streets of Paris in a ball gown, and being left trying to find any link between the commercial and the scent. But with Lush Cosmetics‘ new Gorilla Gallery, the inspiration is on full display—and it’s awesome.

Gorilla Gallery IV is a free exhibition featuring 14 interactive installations celebrating perfume as an art form, each immersing you into the thought process of Lush head perfumer Simon Constantine and artist Hal Samples. Look out for scenes from a silent disco with a built-in selfie station, to a Lebanese-style home decked out with lanterns and intricate throw pillows. The inspiration is equally varied: travels to places like Syrian refugee camps and experiences chatting with the homeless in the Hollywood hills. Many of the perfumes come from personal sentiments from Constantine’s and Samples’s own lives. Amelie Mae is named after Constantine’s daughter who wanted a scent of her own (below you can see the weathered piece of paper where Amelie wrote down her desired perfume aromatics). Scents Model and Sweet Grandma are nods to Samples’s late grandmother who was a glamour model in the 1940s who still went to nightclubs with him in her 60s.

Some of the scents will only be featured in the exhibition and not for sale, others will be exclusively for sale at the gallery. But don’t leave without wearing the hat, tasting the bread, putting the headphones on and immersing yourself in the duo’s Lush world.
