Kin’s Farm Market Turns 30

The family-owned business celebrates another decade of success in B.C.

In 29 years, Kin’s Farm Market has opened as many locations across the Lower Mainland — a true Cinderella story given the Leung family’s humble Vancouver beginnings.

It all started at the Granville Public Market, where Chie Yau Leung and his wife Wen Chie Wen Leung decided to open an eight-foot table to sell produce from local farmers. It was 1983, and they had given up everything to move their three children to Canada just two years prior. With a bit of good luck, and a whole lot of hard work, the small business grew. They opened their first brick-and-mortar location in Richmond, and their second in Ladner, before spreading their wings across the region.

Kin’s Farm Market is named after their three children, Kin Wah, Kin Hun, and Kin Fun. The Chinese character “Kin” means “build”, and there couldn’t be a better representation of the family’s can-do approach to business. Ever humble of their success, the Leung family credits the gracious mentorship of close friends and fellow business owners for their growth. One of their first loyal customer at the store is a Chinese business man, Mr. Wong, who was impressed with the siblings’ determination and drive. He quickly became one of their first mentors.

That’s exactly why the local business is committed to giving back. To date, Kin’s Market has donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, Richmond General Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, the Canadian Cancer Society, Mt. St. Joseph’s Tapestry Foundation, Growing Chefs, S.U.C.C.ES.S., and the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems, as well as several community initiatives in support of youth development and seniors.

This summer Kin’s Farm Market celebrates thirty years as a proud part of our local communities. Stop by one of their locations — from Chilliwack to North Van — to learn more about what sets this specialty grocer apart and see what they have planned for the next thirty years.
