Are you more Olivia Newton John than Kim Kardashian? More Saved by the Bell than Riverdale? More laidback-cool than black-tie gala? If so, this weekend offers the perfect opportunity to party for a cause. For the first time, Rethink Breast Cancer‘s annual Boobyball fundraiser is coming to Vancouver.

Now Rethink’s flagship event, Boobyball originated in Toronto in 2002 when Amanda Blakely and Ashleigh Dempster decided to host an event for their friend Sarah O’Regan, who was diagnosed with aggressive, advanced breast cancer at just 23 years old. More than 600 people showed their support at the inaugural event, and it now takes place every October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with themes that have transported guests to summer camp, the circus and even outer space. This year’s theme, Let’s Get Physical, celebrates the trends of the ’80s and ’90s (think neon leg warmers, lycra bodysuits and retro beats) and aims to promote regular physical activity—aerobic dance-offs included!—which helps to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

The soirée starts at 8 p.m. this Saturday night, October 21, at The Imperial. Party-goers can throw back a neon cocktail, enjoy scrumptious treats from Emelle’s CateringSavoury City and Dipped Doughnut Co., or recreate a classic slumber party experience at the friendship bracelet making station. And for those who want to show off their radical moves on the dance floor, throwback tunes (we’ll be waiting for classic hits from the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and JLo) will be going all night.

The event is reflective of Rethink Breast Cancer’s mission to find creative, relevant ways to engage young people in the breast cancer movement. Rethink aims to reach out to the under-40 crowd to address their unique concerns, and to raise awareness through community and connection. Since its launch in 2002, Boobyball has become a popular event among young philanthropists in Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa and Winnipeg; the event has raised more than $4.2 million for Rethink Breast Cancer, which goes towards resources, education and advocacy initiatives.
