Condo of the Week: $259,000 for a float home in Coal Harbour

An adorable space for humans and seafaring hobbits alike

January 27, 2016

The Details: $259,000 / 1984 / 300 sq. ft. / 1 bed, 1 bath / B15 1525 Coal Harbour Quay / MLS: R2026911

The Condo: Who says you can’t afford something with a little cool factor in Vancouver? This utterly adorable floating home in Coal Harbour, one of just 20 in its tight-knit community, makes the most of its incredibly efficient 300 sq. ft. Somehow managing to fit a kitchen, dining table, and seating area onto the main floor, plus a sleeping loft above, the space is indeed liveable for one (or two if you’re very fond of each another). The floating deck off the stern is a truly unique place to watch the world go by—not to mention herons, seals, sea planes, and yachts.

The neighbourhood: Situated amongst some the most expensive buildings downtown, this prime Coal Harbour location is a short stroll to the business district, Stanley Park, and many of the best restaurants Vancouver has to offer. If you work downtown, walking the seawall to work is rather nice way to start your day.

The potential downsides: While it oozes romance and charm, boat-house living has a few drawbacks. Close proximity your neighbours and the constant sounds of the marina being primary among them. The lack of certainty around long-term moorage also leaves some grey area for the future. Annual costs related to live-aboard moorage are around $1,000 per year.
