A literary extravaganza, the Verses Festival of Words celebrates a wide range of literary arts, from spoken word to page poetry, singer songwriters to improv. This year offers workshops and performances such as Sounds Like Fire, a night of literary titans; Word Circus, feats of wordsmithery; the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Championships and much more!

Travel the World Through Music

April 26 to 29

Dedicated to presenting musicians that play traditional music from around the globe, the World Music Festival is a four day party you won’t want to miss! The festival features acts such as the traditional flamenco group Calle Verde, Zimbamoto who play music from Zimbabwe and surrounding areas and Mazacote whose influences come from Nicaragua, Mozambique and Colombia.

When: April 26 to 29

Discover Incredible Opera

April 28 to May 6

Immerse yourself in the brilliance of Russian midsummer “white nights” at the Vancouver Opera Festival. Featuring the classic Russian Opera Eugene Onegin, a Russian Arts and Culture day, an Opera Bar and a whole week of intimate chamber music concerts; the Opera Festival will have you belting out arias in no time. Of note is Requiem for a Lost Girl, an original chamber music collaboration with the Kettle Choir and Writers Guild that explores themes of homelessness, mental illness and addiction to create a powerful combination of both true stories and theatre.

From fuchsias to fruit trees, berries to begonias, mushrooms kits to succulents the VanDusen Plant Sale has it all! Celebrating 40 years of connecting human and plant pals, the plant sale boasts an impressive selection including “tried and true” plants and more rare varieties for all your gardening desires. Proceeds go to support the garden.

Dance the Day Away

Sunday is International Dance Day! To celebrate, The Dance Centre is putting on a host of free performances throughout the day. You can expect thrilling Flamenco, students doing hip-hop created by the OURO Collective and a dance/poetry hybrid show exploring the influence we have on each other’s lives.
