Tiptoe Through the Tulips

April 24 to May 6

Take a road trip to gasp at glorious fields filled with tulips. (Try saying that three times fast!) Both Tulips of the Valley in Chilliwack and the Abbotsford Tulip Festival’s humongous tulip fields are in full bloom which means bright colours and the perfect place for your next #Instastory. Visitors can enjoy the fields, kids’ crafts, photo competitions and more before buying some tulip bulbs of their own. Early opening times are also scheduled so you can see the sun rise over thousands of vivid blooms.

Attend a Powerful Discussion

Thursday, May 3

EMMA Talks brings together women-identified writers, activists and storytellers for a series of engaging talks and community events. This month features Dr. Amina Wadud, author of Qur’an and Woman and Inside the Gender Jihad, and Professor Emeritus of Islamic Studies and Visiting Scholar at Starr King School for the Ministry, for a talk on Feminist Muslim Voices. The evening will also feature a dialogue installation by Maisaloon Al-Ashkar, Hannah Ali and Sarah Munawar.

Get Inspired by Craft

Ever wanted to take a ceramics workshop with Korean masters, go on a tour of the Marine Building or learn more about Chilkat weaving? Crafted Vancouver is an almost dizzying array of workshops, talks and tours from incredible craftspeople from Vancouver and abroad. Of note is a demonstration by Douglas Chang of Ai and Om Knives on the making of Japanese knives and how to properly care for these functional pieces of art so that they can be passed on from generation to generation.

Make Your Own Lightsaber

Get in touch with your Jedi side at Family Night: May the 4th Be With You at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre! Dress up as your favourite Star Wars character, get to know the science behind lightsabers, compete in droid trivia, visit the stars in a planetarium show and make your own lightsaber! Rebels or Empire fighters alike can end the night gazing up at the stars from the observatory and imagine a galaxy far far away…

Party on Cinco De Mayo

What better way to celebrate Cinco De Mayo then a suckling pig taco feast and Mezcal Master Class! Featuring food and margaritas from chef Stuart Irving and Christian Chamont, Cuchillo and Cointreau’s Cinco De Mayo party will have you feeling the fiesta spirit. The master class takes place before the feast and tickets include a welcoming tequila shot, a margarita and all you can eat food.
